(This page is very much under constructions.. I don't have time to write out all I need to say here, but I had to put something up for the players.. so realize that this is not yet complete.)
The Cabal are the oldest race in the universe. Long before there was any other form of life the cabal were sentient and had begun to use tools. Now, they have technology and powers such as the younger races that have sprung up could never dream of. They have visited other worlds with their advanced technology, and most young races have some concept and often worship the "winged ones."
Early on in their history, the Cabal split in a terrible war, between a factions calling themselves the Kerubim and the Daemons:
Kerubim (Kerubae): The Kerubim or "angels" as they are known on many worlds, rule the universe and determine the laws of the universe, very much like a political party in power in a country. Their policies form the core of what is considered "good" on many worlds. They enjoy the best the universe has to offer.
Daemons:The daemons are the "loyal opposition", and have been fighting to claim dominance over the universe since time immemorial, though they lack the power of the Kerubim and tend to mostly undermine and corrupt what the Kerubs create. Daemons are often at teh core of what is considered "Evil" on many world. They skulk in backward dimensions and unknown planets, gathering their forces.
Gargoyles: When the cabal split, a group of them would not take sides and chose to remain neutral. Over the countless millenia while the war has raged, the kerubim and the daemons have evolved into sub-races, distinct from each other, though many still retain the appearance of winged humanoids. The gargoyles, the neutral ones, resemble most closely the ancient cabal. It is they who seek to retain balance in the universe, fighting to keep the angels and demons from destroying too much with their war. The gargoyles are rare and few. Without the zeal of their cousins, their powers are quite limited compared to angels and demons, who wield mighty magics and impressive technologies, however, the gargoyles have held throughout time two secrets that they jealously guard that have granted them the edge they have needed to survive.
No daemon or kerubim has ever mastered these powers, but neither have they desired to.
While the majority of Kerubim serve the cause, as do the majority of demons and gargoyles their own, it is natural that within any group there will be those who go against the grain. So it is in the politics of the cabal. It is known that among the main factions there are the following:
Fallen Angels: Angels who use their powers not in the cause of the Kerubim, but to their own gain are called Fallen or Dark angels. These angels tend to dissociate from their cousins by wearing darker colors. Many of them have been cursed by the leaders of the Kerubim, and are undead.
Good Daemons: Though none have as yet been encountered, it is almost certain that some demons somewhere seek to do good in the universe.
The Grey: Though we know very little about these, there is a faction among the gargoyles who desire to interfere in the affairs of others, either for good or evil, and these call themselves The Grey.
Long ago, the kerubim created for themselves a race of beings to serve them in their mighty fortresses and fight in their wars. These creatures were uplifted from mortality and given powers similar to those of a kerubim, though greatly limited. When the kerubs did this, in true cabal fashion, they were imitated by the daemons and the gargoyles alike, in time. These servitor-races are:
Immortals: These uplifted mortals were granted immortality from their kerub masters and their psychic powers were augmented, to be the kerubim agents on Earth and other planets. The psychic powers possessed by each immortal varies somewhat, but they are often quite limited.
Devils: When the angels made immortals, so too did the daemons, but they weren't content to simply upgrade a lesser species without making them in their own image. The devils, therefore, resemble humans but they have batwings and horns, an amusing tribute to their winged masters. They possess powers similar to immortals, and are similarly limited. However, the daemons built into them certain key vulnerabilities that they could exploit to ensure that they would never break from daemon control (ps, it didn't work.)
Dragons: Last but not least the gargoyles too built themselves a servitor race, or so it seems. The mysterious and elusive Satyrnine, the "dragons", seem to have been this effort. Since the Satyrnine are a reclusive race it is not yet confirmed that this is true, but certain elements point to it, not the least of which is the "family resemblance" similar to that seen in devils.
All these servitor races were made intelligent, and so naturally in the fullness of time, they learned the secrets of their masters and demanded their independence, and as a result, these three immortal races now roam the universe with their own goals.
