This is a story that I wrote for my E210 class. For those of you not savvy with the class numbering system at CSU, that would equate to Beginning Creative Writing. Yes, I know, I agree...Beginning is a little below my apparent ability level. But I had to take it to get to Advanced. Anyway, for our fiction unit, the big project was to write an 8-12 page story. Easy. Though it took me quite a while to get an idea of what I wanted to do, I finally figured it out while looking through art saved on my comp. I came across a piccy by Ian R. Soulfox called "Consoloation" that showed the Reaper trying to console his latest charge. A little lightbulb went off in my head. After getting permission from Soulfox to write a story based on his drawing, and also receiving his input on the subject material, I went to work. I'm still not 100% satisfied with this story. During class we workshopped these in small groups a couple of times, and one of my workshop members commented that she "[couldn't] say [she] wished [she] could hand him (the Reaper) a Kleenex," which to me says I missed my mark. And I knew I did, even as I was reading my drafts. I'm going to go through this story several more times in the future and try to really get to the point where the reader sheds their tears not only for Billy, but for the Reaper. I'll find the voice and the words to hit that emotional depth someday. I have two versions of the story here. A furry and a non-furry version. I wrote the non-furry version because I felt that in a class with people who don't know much about furry, having to figure that out while reading the story would have taken away from it too much. But here, were everyone takes furry for granted, having the characters be furs isn't distracting to the story at all. Thanks again to Soulfox for allowing me to write this.
