Author's Notes Hello, and welcome to my Harvest Moon 64 guide. This is the first guide I've ever done. I rarely do this type of thing, but I noticed that many HM guides are incorrect, incomplete, and lacking in detail, so I tried my best to make a guide that tells the game as completly as possible. I've also have made a point not to list anything I haven't done for myself, and if I do, make a point that it hasn't been confirmed as possible. All of the secrets I've listed ARE 100% true. Some of the most in-depth things you'll find are the Girls Guide, The Secrets Guide, The festivals, scenes.. etc. Also a guide to other HM games, if you're interested and want to know more about them. So, enjoy! -------------------------- 1. Introduction -------------------------- -Story- Your grandfather's farm used to be a busy and happy place to be. Sadly, he's getting old and weak, and cannot work as hard as he used to. You and your father are called back to the small town by the farm, for he is about to pass on. Rushing to his side, you listen close to what he has to say, but you can't make it out.. And now it's too late. Head hanging low, you walk about the town square where the people are gathered to say goodbye. You share your memories with several friends, and bring the sad news to your father. The both of you visit the farm, which has fallen apart. You can't let it go to waste. It's your job to bring it back to life again. Your father is unsure of your abilities, but he agrees, with a warning: If you haven't done a good job and fully restored the farm in two years, you're not allowed to keep it. But you know you can do it. You'll make your grandfather proud.. -Controls- Start:Opens up your "backpack". In it contains your tools, items you've picked up, and belongings. Press A to select something, and move the control stick up to put it in once of the 2 top boxes. Belongings can't be moved or used. Putting a tool in the Green box means that you will use it whenever you press B. Putting an item in the blue box means that you will be holding it. Press Z to see a description of the thing. It is more descriptive than if you're just holding it. Press B to exit the menu. B:Use the tool in the green box. Hold it longer to use the leveled-up tool, if you have it. A:When in front of a.. Person, talk to them Thing, pick it up, again to throw it out Sign, read it Mailbox, read the letter in it, press it again to see if there are more letters When holding Something.. A:Throw it away, give it to someone, put it in your shipping bin C-Up:Put it in your backpack C-Down:Eat it, if it's a food Z:Read it's description -What to do at First- When you first start your game, you may be confused about what to do. Here's the things you need to get done once you've started. You don't have to do some of these right away, or in this order, but you should eventually do them. -Go to the Florist Lillia and use 200 of your 300g to buy a bag of turnip seeds. -Hoe a 3x3 patch of dirt and sow your seeds. Go to the pond and fill up your watering can, and water them everyday. -Go to the green ranch, in the fenced in green area. Tell Ann you like horses, and you will get your horse. -Pick your favorite girl, and start talking to and giving her gifts everyday. -Talk to and whistle for your horse everyday. -Save up 600g and buy the brush at Rick's. Brush your horse everyday. -Talk to the guy by the fisherman's tent and tell him you like to fish, and get your fishing rod. -Save up 1500g, buy a chicken, and start raising them. -Save up 4000g, buy a sheep, and start taking care of it, OR wait until you get 6000g. -Save up 6000, buy a cow, and start taking care of it. -------------------------- 2. Tools -------------------------- You start the game with these, your 5 basic tools, that you use for all of your farm's clearing and vegetable growing. After a certain amount of use, tools will go up 1 level, and change color . You will notice this by a little trumpet noise and your character holding up the new tool. To use a leveled-up tool, hold the B button a little longer than usual. You will see 2 or 3 animations(depending on color of tool) for as long as you hold the B button. Let go at the level of your choice to use it. For example, for the Hammer, the level 1 is held up, then higher(silver), then the highest(gold). Hoe-Tills the land on your farm, so you can plant seeds on it. You can also use it to dig in the mine. Basic-Tills 1 square Silver-3 squares Gold-6 squares Hammer-Breaks up stones, removes broken fences, and flattens down tilled ground. Basic-6 hits to break up a boulder Silver-2 hits Gold-1 hit Sickle-Cuts grass, which turns it into fodder. It can also cut weeds and plants. Basic-Cuts 1 square of plant Silver-Cuts 3 squares Gold-Cuts 9 squares, in a 3x3 area, but you must stand in the center square for it to work. # # # # 0 # # # # #-Square 0-You Watering Can-Waters your plants. Basic-Waters 1 square Silver-Waters 3 squares Gold-Waters 9 squares # # # # # # 0 # # # #-Square 0-You Axe-Chops up stumps, which turns them into lumber. Basic-Chops stump in 6 hits Silver-2 hits Gold-1 hit Some things can be done without the use of tools. Weeds can be picked by hand, stones can be thrown into the pond, and tilled squares can be flattened by putting a piece of lumber on it. Use these to save energy for other chores. -------------------------- 3. Making Money -------------------------- -Crop Growing- Crops are your main source of cash, as well as the best. Here's the different crops for each season, which is the best and how to take care of your crops. General Rules:Water your crops everyday. If they're not watered they stay alive, but don't grow. Tilled areas should be 3x3 in size. # # # # # # # # # Like so. One little snag is that you can't water the center crop once the seeds have sprouted. For one-time crops, this is fine, because once you harvest all of the grown plants you can water the center one, and not waste seeds. For crops that you can harvest many times, do the same thing. Although you can't get the center crop, there's bound to be enough rain to make it grow, and by the end of the season you can cut down the outside plants to get to it. For the ideal harvest, plant equal amounts of each type of plant, because the faster growing plants will get you money while the slower ones grow. ~Types of Crops~ Spring~ Turnips-Although cheap to sell, these grow *really* fast. Plant a lot of these at the beginning, so you'll be able to buy more seeds. Potatos-These are your main crops, since the price and growing time is balanced for the most annual cash. Cabbage-They cost a lot, but they take longer to grow. Not that much longer, though, so you can get some good money out of these. Summer~ Tomatoes-They take quite a while to grow at the beginning, but you can re-harvest every 3 days, which is much faster than any other plant. Corn-They take forever to grow, and forever to regenerate. By the time I had gotten a crop of these, the season was already half over, and I only got 2 or 3 harvests. Forget about them, the price can't live up to the time. But, they make great gifts for Ann. Fall~ Eggplants-Your only crop for the season, so plant a lot of these. They take less time to grow than corn but more than tomatoes. Selling price is pretty cheap, unfortunatly. Winter~ Strawberries-Only can be bought with a greenhouse. These take an average amount of time to grow, but sell for the most of all the crops. Also, they make good gifts for Popuri and Karen, you can get several recipies with them, and they're a surefire win at the vegetable festival. -Animals- Here is a general guide to your animals, that focuses on tips to take good care of them and how they can benifit or ruin you. Chickens~ Chickens are the first things you will buy, once you get enough money. Unfortunatly, they don't give you much money to start saving up. Advantages:Cheap to take care of, since chicken feed costs only 10g per pack and you can keep them outside if you have enough lumber. Can breed for almost free, the price of an egg. Eggs are also good gifts for Elli, Cliff and Gray if you want them to be your friends. Disadvantages:They die easily, if you don't feed them for 3 or 4 days. Also they give you very little money. It's a real pain to get them inside when it rains, since you have to take them out one by one instead of all at once. Tips: -Don't leave chickens outside in a typhoon. Each and every one will die. -You can save a bit of money by keeping your chickens outside. All you have to do is get some lumber, stick it in the ground to make a closed pen, and keep the chickens inside. You have to be careful though, and fix the fence whenever it breaks. Sheep~ It seems like you should buy a sheep once you've made a lot of money from the chickens, but, I don't really think so. Sheep almost set you back. Although their wool sells for a lot, you don't get it very often, and it costs a lot to buy and care for a sheep. In preparing for a cow, I suggest that you forego the sheep, and just plant some more crops until you get 6000g. After spending 4000g plus cost of shears, plus cost of feed while the sheep is still too young and can't give you anything, it'll take you a lot of shearing to earn up that money back. Just wait, and you'll get the cow a lot faster. But you can still get a sheep later, when money's better. Advantages:Wool is very expensive, so you'll get a lot of money for it. Also, a sheep costs less than a cow, so you get get one when you don't have enough for a cow. Wool is also an excellent gift for Ann, although an expensive one. Disadvantages:Sheep give wool only once per week, so you'll have to live on that until it gives wool again. Also, you can't breed sheep, so any you have are stuck with you. Tips: -You can change the date of when your sheep gives wool by not shearing it until the desired day. This is helpful if you want to make all of your sheep give wool at the same time, or spread it out over the week. -Remember, you can't get rid of a sheep once you have it, so beware of the number of sheep you buy. Once you've bought everything and settled down, it's nicer to sell some cows and lighten your workload than to raise sheep for money you don't need. Cows~ The real deal. They take a long time to grow, but boy do they make up for it. Think about it, you could have 8 sheep giving wool once a week, or cows giving milk everyday for the same price. They do take a long time, though. You have to wait for it to grow up, then wait until it gives more and more milk. Take good care of you cows and get them to give milk gold if they win the cow festival. Advantages:Large amounts of milk sell for a good price, plus you get it everyday. Disadvantages:Cows are expensive to buy and raise, and take a long time to produce large milk. Cow Breeding: For 3000g and a full grown cow, you can make your own cow. The cow you get not only gives more milk faster, but you can sell it for a very good price. Advantages:Cheaper than buying a new cow, cow gives milk faster, you can sell the cow when you don't want it anymore. Disadvantages:Takes 3 times as long to raise it to adult, waiting for birth, for it to become as large as a bought cow, and finally to maturity. Also, the pregnant cow gives less milk, which loses money. -Fishing & Gathering- When in between harvests, or in need of some extra money, the quickest way is to gather things you find in the mountains, and sell them. Although most are cheap, a rucksack full of them each day will give you some quick money. Fishing- To get the fishing pole, talk to the man by the fisherman's tent. He will ask you if you like fishing, tell him you'll fish, and he will give you the fishing pole. To fish, press B by the pond you are by, in the river, or off the dock at the beach. Hold B until you get a bite. Quickly release B. If you did it right, you should have caught a fish. There are 3 different types of fish. Small-The tiny, white and green fish are not worth much, about 30g. They don't make very good gifts, people don't care much about them. You should just throw them away, or else give it to your dog. Medium-The brown and white fish are an average selling price, and make better gifts. Keep these if you catch them, and sell them all for a good amount of money. Large-The blue and white fish have an excellent selling price, of 500g. When gift-giving, sell these and give away the mediums. A bagful of these is as good as a day's harvest at the farm. -------------------------- 4. Cast of Characters -------------------------- These are all of the characters, major and minor, that exist in the game. Each character has a little bio of what they do, what they're like and what they think of you. It also tells what they look like and where they're located in case you've never heard of them. The Girls: Elli-She works at the Bakery, making cakes and other things to buy. She is very professional and usually talks about the business, of how the cakes are made, the lottery, and who to give cakes to, so she's a good source of information. You'll notice her by her short brown hair and blue dress. She's usually walking about the bakery. Popuri-She helps her mother with the flower shop, her family business. She can tell you about the Flower Shop's hours and days off, but will often talk about her love of flowers. Make sure you don't mistake her for her mother, who looks like her. Popuri has long, fluffy pink hair with a green hairband. She is usually seen to the left of the flower shop. Ann-She helps out at the Ranch, and takes care of the animals. She is the one to talk to your 1st spring about getting your horse. If you talk to her a lot, she will come by your farm and tell you how your horse is doing, and how to take care of it. Ann has braided orange hair with a big bow in the back, and is usually wearing overalls. She is located in the grassy part of the ranch, to the bottom right. Karen-She works at the bar and the vineyard, but can't be trusted on when she'll be there. She will tell you about the history of the vineyard if you get to know her. Karen doesn't like you when you first meet her, but will become a good friend over time. She has long brown hair with gold streaks, and wears a purple vest and brown shorts. She is sometimes at the bar, sometimes at the vineyard, and always at the beach on Sunday. Maria-She runs the local library, but won't talk to you about much, because she is shy. Maria is always at the library, except for the beginning of summer and winter, when she takes vacations. Maria has glasses and long, braided black hair. The Rivals: Jeff-He is the Bakery Master, who you go to when you buy cakes to take home. He has a moustache and black hair, and wears a white shirt and black pants. He will marry Elli if you get to know him well. Grey-He works at the Ranch and is Ann's brother. He is usually angry and doesn't talk much. Grey *really* doesn't like you, and will tell you to go away if you try to talk to him. The story goes that Grey used to be a great horse racer and was a lot nicer, but got into an accident and became really agressive towards everyone. He becomes a little more friendly if you get to know him and even tells you how to win the horse races. He has orange hair like Ann and wears a baseball cap. He will marry Popuri. Cliff-After your 1st flower festival, Cliff will show up at your farm with his falcon, Kain. Give him something to eat and he will introduce himself. Cliff is an independant traveller, and lives his live moving from town to town, getting off on his own. Thus, he will leave town, like Karen, if you don't become friends with him. You have until your 1st winter to do this. He'll come to your farm and tell you he's leaving. He's related to Karen. Cliff has spiky brown and blond hair and blue eyes, and will marry Ann. Harris-He is the local mailman and is very friendly, but won't talk about much when you first meet him. He can tell you about your mailbox and letters, and about his job. If you talk to him in the bar a lot, he will tell you that he secretly likes Maria, but doesn't know how to tell her. Keep on talking to him, and he will eventually gain enough confidence and marry her. Kai-He is the guy you always see at the vineyard, wearing a purple bandanna. He helps out Karen's parents with their business, making wine. He is from a foreign country in the south, and is pretty friendly. He won't talk to you much in the beginning, but will eventually tell you about working and the vineyard. Although Karen yells at him, he likes her a lot, and understands about her wanting to leave the vineyard. He will eventually marry her. -The Townspeople- The Mayor-He shows you around the village, tells you about festivals, and runs them, as well. He's very nice and encourages you on your work. He's also Maria's father. The Mayor's Wife-She can tell you about festivals as well, and is very spiritual. She is usually in the house, but often goes to the Bakery and Church on Sundays. She's also the one you go to for betting on races. Lillia-She runs the flower shop and is Popuri's mother. She's usually very chipper and friendly, but is down when her husband leaves, and when the weather is bad. She can tell you about crops and flowers. Basil-He's Popuri's father, and a botanist. Every winter he leaves town for warmer places, and comes back in Spring. He can tell you about raising plants. Elli's Grandmother-She used to be as good of a cook as Elli, and taught her everything she knows. She's too old to cook anymore, and spends her remaining days in the garden by the bakery. Priest-He teaches the children on weekdays, and runs services on sunday. He's very friendly, and talks about children, the church and love. Kent-Kent is one of the kids around town, and is the oldest of them all. He has brown hair with a patch missing. After you get to know him, Kent starts to idolize you, and wants to have a farm when he grows up. He comes by your farm when you get each type of animal for the first time, and for certain festivals. Stu-He is Kent's younger brother, and is a bit more sensible than him. Stu loves flowers, and will come by your farm when you grow them. Kent and Stu's parents have died, and they live with their grandfather, the potion shop dealer(At the firefly festival, they ask their Grampa if their parents are there too.) He talks about the girls and what they like. May-She is the youngest of the kids, and is the daughter of the Buyer, and granddaughter of the midwife. May dresses a lot like her, and likes cats as well. May's mother died, and she talks about her a lot. If you get to know her well, she will ask you which girl you like, and tell you about her. Saibara-The old man who runs the Crafts shop. He's a perfectionist and only sells crafts that he's very proud of, so there's not much selction. He usually talks about life in the city, and about getting older. Rick-He runs the tool shop, and is Ann's cousin. He's constantly trying to invent things, but usually fails. Rick isn't that serious about his business, and forgets to open it on rainy days. He doesn't talk about much at first and is always apologizing for something. If you talk to him more he will tell you about his personal life, like getting married, and about a girl who rejected him. Midwife-She delivers the children in town, including yours. She tells you about dating, marriage and children. She wears a red dress with a pattern on the bottom, and has gray hair in two long braids. The Buyer-Every day at 5pm, he drops by to pick up all of the goods you've shipped, and pays you for them. Anything put in after 5 is ruined, it won't get picked up at all, even the next day. The buyer hangs around the bar as well, although he doesn't have much to say. He's friendly, though, and sometimes talks about May. Bartender-He runs the bar, and is Jeff's uncle. He usually talks about the bar and wine, and is the one who gives you the old wine. Ann's Dad-He's the one you see to buy animals. Karen's Dad Karen's Mom Greg the Fisherman The Boss Carpenter The Carpenters The Old Couple -Visitors and Supernatural Characters- The Elves-The small, green-haired, santa claus suit wearing people that live in the cave. There are 3 of them, the head elf, and the other two elves. The head elf is the one to talk to. Become friends with him, and the elves might help feed your animals when you're sick. He'll start saying "see you" when he's a friend, and "we're happy today too" when he's a really good friend. The Goddess-The small pond to the left of the carpenter's house is where the goddess lives. If you want to see her, stand on the bridge between 9am and 5pm and throw a vegetable, egg, milk, or wool into the pond. The goddess will appear and give you 3 things to wish for, weather, strength or love. Wish for weather to prevent typhoons and rain, wish for strength to give you more energy, or wish for love to raise the heart levels of the girls a little. The Water Imp-The small pond by the fisherman's tent is where the water imp lives. Throw a medium or large size fish into the pond between 9am and 5pm and he will appear. He'll give you something different for each fish, but will only give you it once. The 3 Out of Town Girls-They only appear at the races and fireworks. One has a beret and long brown hair, one has red hair in a bun and one has blond pigtails. If you grow flowers or win the cow festival, they might drop by your farm. The Lovesick Couple-They drop by your farm from time to time, once to ask you for directions and sometimes if you plant flowers. They will admire each other, and exchange smooches before leaving. The Gourmet-The fat man with the top hat, who appears at the cow and vegetable festivals. He rates food and milk, and speaks bad french. Sometimes you can see him walking around in the crossroads as well. The Horse Racing Couple-The old man and woman in brown plaid suits who watch the races. They will stop by your farm if you win a race. -------------------------- 5. Locations Guide -------------------------- --Places-- ~~Your Farm~~ Mailbox: It's by the exit of your farm. Check your mail by pressing A. You should check it everyday, since letters contain important information. Letters you get stay in your mailbox, and are gone once you have read them. When you have your picture taken, the picture will be in the mail. Some mail you can get:Ads from the shops, Reminders of festivals, announcements of new items in shops, and letters from friends. Shipping Bins: Right outside of your house is a shipping bin. This is where you put all of your harvested crops, things from the mountains, and animal products. Everyday at 5:00pm, the buyer comes over to your house and collects the stuff you shipped, and give you money for it, even if you're not at home. If you put something in the shipping bin after 5:00pm, then it won't get shipped, ever, so you don't get money for it. There are shipping bins in the barn and chicken coop, and also on your horse when it's fully grown. Doghouse and Stable: These are mostly just for decoration. You can't put your dog or horse in here. -House- On the bedside table there's a booklet. In it contains- Diary:Use this to go to sleep, thus ending your day. "Write" means to save your progress, "Don't Write" sends you to sleep without saving, and "Don't Write, Don't Sleep" means to cancel sleeping altogether. Tool Note:This gives some info about your main tools. Photo Album:Whenever you get a picture in the mail, it shows up here. You start out with a picture of your grandfather. Estimate:Shows your Dog and Horse's names, their trophies if any, how many cows and chickens you have, and how much fodder and lumber you have. TV: Channel 1:Weather-Shows you if it's going to rain, snow, or if a typhoon is coming. Channel 2:News-Tells you of upcoming festivals. Channel 3:Education-Gives a short lesson about farming, which appears at random each day. Channel 4:Blank-Labelled "entertainment", this was removed from the game because it was very glitchy. There is no way to restore it, but it's useful if you look at the static and turn off the tv. When you turn it back on, you don't have to read through the channel you were last on, just pick the channel you want. After midnight there is a test pattern on every channel. Tool Box:Keep any tools you won't be using in here, to save space. If you buy something and there isn't any space in your backpack, then it will be sent here. ~~Flower Bud Village-East Side~~ -Florist Lillia- Open: 9Am to 5pm, Closed on Sunday This shop is the first you will go to. It sells all types of things you can grow, such as vegetables and flowers. Items: Vegetable Seeds:These vary every season, however, if you buy the greenhouse, every type of seed will become available, except for flowers, grass and strawberries, when they are not in season. Grass Seeds:Plant grass on your fields for your own fodder. Once it is fully grown, cut it down with your sickle to make fodder. You can also put a fence around it, and put your animals in the pen and let them graze outside. Grass can be planted from spring through summer and harvested through fall. MoonDrop Seeds:These are your basic flowers. They have three purposes:To give to Popuri, to make her drop by your farm more often, and to get a power berry. If you plant a lot of these, say 3 or 4 packages' worth, Stu, Popuri, The 3 out of town girls and the lovesick couple might drop by to look at them. Remember, though, that these can also be found in the wild for free, and you can't sell them. Blue Mist Seed:This becomes availible in your second year. Once you buy it, Popuri will give you the instructions on how to take care of it. You can only buy one, but if the one you plant dies, you can buy a replacement in the flower shop. Every year after that you can plant one, if you like. For more info, go to Popuri's section under "The Girls: Dating". Pink Cat Mint Seeds:Lillia sells these, but you can only buy them in the Flower Festival, not in the shop. These are flowers that you can't find anywhere in the wild, and must be planted with the moondrops for a power berry. Other than that, there isn't much difference, except that if you plant these as well as the moondrops you'll have a better chance of someone dropping by to admire them. *Raffle*:When you buy your first package of flower seeds, Lillia will give you a flower card. Whenever you buy flower seeds, including Pink Cat Mints and Blue Mist, you will get 1 point on the card for every package you buy. In the winter, on the 25th-28th, the raffle takes place. Talk to Lillia over the desk to enter. You must have 10 points on your card to buy a ticket. When you buy the ticket, Lillia will tell you if you've won something. There are 4 prizes you can win, which are described in the "KnickNacks" section. The prizes are random. If your card is blank, Lillia will give you the consolation prize, a bag of moondrop seeds. -Flower Bud Bakery- Open:9am to 5pm, Closed on Monday The bakery sells drinks and desserts for when you need some extra strength, and for gifts as well. To buy things to eat right away, go to the table on the left and look at the menu sitting there. To buy things to take home with you, go up to the counter. Menu- Cake Pie Cookies Tea Milk Counter- Cake Pie Cookies *Raffle*:Similar to Florist Lillia's, except you must buy cakes to get your points. There are 4 prizes which are described in "KnickNacks", and a consolation prize which is a package of cookies. -Church- Open:8am to 5pm, Closed on Saturday. School goes from 8am to 3pm Mon-Fri except for rainy days, Church is held on Sunday and goes from 8am to 12pm. The church doubles as a school for the kids in town, so if you want to talk to them, you can count on them being there. On sunday Church is held, but it isn't much different, except the Mayor and his wife are there. The church is also where you go for the Starry Night festival, New Year's Eve and your wedding. -Rick's Tool Shop- Open:10am to 6pm, closed on wednesdays, weekends, and rainy or snowy days. Rick's is where you get most of your tools for animal care, plus a few things to decorate your home with. Rick closes his shop so often that it's hard to get in. It's not listed on his door, but Rick will always close his shop during bad weather. Tools: Brush-If you're going to have cows or sheep, or want to win the horse race, you need this. Cows and sheep need to be brushed everyday. You should brush your horse too, if you want to win the horse race. Shears-After you buy a sheep, these become availible. When your sheep is fully grown, you can use these to cut their wool. Milking Machine-After you buy a cow, this becomes availible. When you cow is fully grown, use this to milk it. Room Organizer-Look at the piece of paper on Rick's desk to buy it. This is a cabinet that you can store flowers, mined objects, and milk in. Carpet-This becomes availible in your 1st fall. It's just a patterned rug that goes under the table in your house. Blue Feather-If you have a kitchen and a girl with a pink heart, this will appear in Rick's shop after a few days. Use it on the girl with a pink heart to marry her. -Saibara's Craft Shop- Open:8am to 9pm, closed Mondays This shop hardly sells anything, but check in here now and then to see if anything shows up. Pot:Saibara won't sell you this until you give him a blue rock. The next day after that, the pot will be blue, and he will sell it to you. It goes on the table in your house. Ocarina:A little homage to Zelda 64. The only reason you buy this is to play in the Spirit festival. -The Bar- Open:6pm to 12am, closed Sundays The bar is the main hangout for all of the rivals, Karen and the buyer, so if you want to talk to any of them your best bet is in here. The rivals also talk about different things in the bar, like how much they like a girl. The drinks here don't do much except build up your drinking capacity. If you want an energy boost, choose milk or water. Water is free, so make good use of it. Menu- Wine Liquor Beer Milk Water -The Town Square- Going up one of the two big stairways, you will enter the town square. This is where many of the festivals are held. On non-festival days it is empty, except for a few people:Lillia and Basil come here on Sundays, Rick is sometimes there on his days off, and the town kids are there sometimes when school is out. ~~Flower Bud Village-West Side~~ -Library- There's not much to do here except talk to Maria. You can look at the shelves and see what kind of books there are(it changes when you look at it a few times), but you can't read any books, and looking at them doesn't make any difference. Sometimes Harris, Stu or May are there. -Mayor's House- The Mayor's wife is usually there. Maria and the Mayor are there during off days. -Midwife's House- Usually the midwife is there. May is there sometimes on her days off. -Cemetary- The small group of graves in the town. Your grandfather is buried there, and the "cemetary for animals" contains any animals that have died on your farm. -Potion Shop- Open:9am to 5pm, closed weekends If you bought the bottle and brought it with you, you can buy medicine here. There is a room at the back with some beds, Stu is there sometimes, and both Stu and Kent are at the shop sometimes on rainy days. ~~The Green Ranch~~ Open-8am to 6pm, closed Thursday -Store- This is where you go when you want to buy animals, or animal supplies. Talk to the Ranch owner to ask about buying or selling animals, or pick up one of the items at the back counter. There is a green booklet on a table in here, that gives you some information about taking care of animals. When you buy your first cow or sheep, the ranch owner will give you a bell, that you can ring to get them to follow you. Animals- Chicken:1500g Sheep:4000g Cow:6000g Supplies- Medicine:1000g/When your cow or sheep gets sick, you must buy this to heal them. Keep in mind that you can only buy one bottle at a time, so if more than one animal gets sick you have to make several trips to get them all healed. Cow Potion:3000g/When a cow is adult, or when it starts to give milk, then you can use this on it to make it pregnant. It takes 21 days before a calf is born. Fodder:30g per pack/You need this to feed your cows and sheep, but not your chickens. You can also grow grass to make fodder. Bird Feed:10g per pack/Feed the chickens with this. You can also build a closed pen out of lumber outside and put your chickens in it, so they won't need to be fed. Just make sure the pen is completly closed, none of the posts are broken, and you don't put them out when it's raining. -House- This house is usually empty, but sometimes Gray is in there when it's raining, and a Thursday. -Barn- Gray is in here usually, if not on the field. Both Ann and Gray are in here when it is raining. Just so you know, you can't ride any of their horses, milk their cows, shear their sheep or feed their animals. -The Beach- Before you enter the fence where the green ranch is, go right, and follow the path to get to the beach. Karen is there on sundays. Stu, Kent, Elli and Greg the Fisherman come here occasionally. You can fish off the dock if you like. ~~The Vineyard~~ This is where Karen and her family lives, as well as Kai. The Spirit Tree is in the top right corner. Kai and Karen's Father are usually outside, and Karen as well on certain days. -------------------------- 6. Evaluation -------------------------- This is, of course, your farm evaluation. Here I list who rates you, what you should do to get a good rating, and what to say when a question comes up. The day happens on the 1st day of Summer, on your 3rd year. You see your father going around the town, asking people about you. The Mayor-Rates you on your participation in festivals. If you attend every festival, win most contests, and do most of the activities(dancing, drinking, riding in balloon) you'll get a good rating. You should also become friends with him. The Midwife-Rates you on your status with the ladies. If you have a pink heart with one girl and are married, you get a good rating. If you have pink hearts with every girl and are married, you get an excellent rating. Good:"He seems to get along well with the girls." Excellent:"All the girls have a crush on him." The Potion Shop Dealer-Rates you on your health. If you don't get sick, and have lots of power nuts in you, you'll get a good rating. The Fisherman-Rates you on your fishing. If you fish often, say a few times a week, you'll get a good rating. Bad:"I'm sorry he doesn't like fishing too much." Good:"He seems pretty laid back." The Head Carpenter-I'm not excactly sure. As a guess, I think he might be grading you on upgrades to your house, or tools being leveled up. Also try to help him out when they're building the bridge and hot spring. Bad:"He still has a long way to go." The Buyer-Rates you on how many items you've shipped. I haven't yet got a good rating with him, so just try and ship tons of stuff, and try to ship every day. Bad:"I really want him to ship more stuff." The Ranch Owner-Rates you on your animals. If you have lots of animals, take good care of them, and don't let any die, you'll get a good rating. Also, try to win the horse race and cow festival to really impress him. Basil-Another unsure one. I'm guessing it's about how much grass you've planted, or planting flowers, or something like that. Just try to grow a few patches(3x3)of grass and flowers, plant the blue mist seed, and become good friends with him. Bad:"He still has a lot to learn." Good:"His grass fields are well kept." The Gourmet-Rates you on how many recipies you have. Have a few, maybe 10 or so is good for an average rating. If you want to get an excellent grade, get each and every recipe. Bad:"I want him to collect more recipes." Good:"I hope he continues to collect." Excellent:"I should give him an award." Later, your father comes to your farm. He evaluates you on how many animals you have. You should have a full barn and chicken coop, or at least 4+ cows or sheep. Bad Rating Question: Do you understand how hard it is, now? Right:I understand. Wrong:It's not hard. Good Rating Question: You have lots of animals. How do you find taking care of them? Right:It's hard, but I enjoy it for the money. How do you find living here? Right:I enjoy it. Wrong:It's hard. Your father gives you your offical rating. He will either look disappointed or tell you you've done a good job. Next, your friends come over. These are the people you've talked to a lot, or have done things for. Your girl or wife will come first. You should have over 5 people visit your farm. Bad:You don't have many friends, do you? Good:Wow, I can't believe this many people came for you. Lastly, is the ending. If you're unmarried, you'll simply look into the sky with your dog. If you're married, you and your wife will talk about your grandfather. Tell her you remember what he said, and she says that you should tell the child when he grows up, or if they have one, if you don't have a child. Roll credits. That's the end. Of course, you can still play the game you have as long as you want, but you don't get evaluated again. -------------------------- 7. KnickNacks -------------------------- * House/kitchen decoration # Backpack item Horse Race Prizes Stable:3000 medals-An upgrade to your old stable, which is located at the left of your barn. Is rumored to prevent typhoons. *Maria-A picture that gets hung over your bed. #Ann-Some knitted socks.(I'm not sure about this) -------------------------- 8. Scenes -------------------------- These are the HM equivilant of cinema-scenes, where you watch a scene play out. There are tons of them and some are larger than others. These are some of the scenes I've come upon. If you want these to remain a surprise, then feel free to skip this section, although if a question comes up, I can tell you what to say. *-A scene between a girl and your rival, which means that they are getting closer. They won't happen if you marry the girl. Each girl has at least two scenes between the rival and her, between different degrees of closeness. !!VERY IMPORTANT!! I noticed not many people have accurate accounts of this scene. It's extremly important to read up on it so it DOES NOT HAPPEN. Karen Leaves-If you haven't gotten at least a blue heart with Karen by your 2nd Summer, Karen will leave for the city, like she said she would. Kai also disappears as well. Unlike most people say, Karen's mother doesn't leave with her. If you go to the beach, Karen will be there with her mother. They say goodbye, and her mother gives her present from her father, some money. Karen tells her not to worry about her, and goes off the dock into a boat. Elli's Grandmother-On about your second year, you will notice Elli's grandmother looks a little different. She has stopped rocking, her eyes are closed and her head is nodding. Talk to her, and she will tell you she has been dreaming about her and your grandfather. She will call Elli, and Elli will come out and tell her to go inside, since she's tired. When grandma doesn't respond, Elli will repeat her name until she starts to cry. The screen goes white, and your day ends. I'm still a little unsure about avoiding this. It might have s omething to do with how good of friends you are with Grandma, for instance if you aren't good friends she will die, or marriage to Elli, if you do it won't happen. I'm saying this because in once game, Grandma never died, and I hadn't married Elli until the 3rd year. But in another game, I married Elli in the 1st year and she died on New Year's day. So, I don't know. Kent sleeps over-One day, when you wake up, Kent will come in and ask you if he can sleep over. Ask him why, Kent will tell you he had a fight with his grandfather over saving up for a farm. He asks you about if it's right to prepare for the future(or something like that), say Not Always. Stu will come in, and tell Kent that the potion shop dealer is sick. You go to the drug store where he is lying in bed. The midwife is there, and says he will get better soon, and you exit the drug store. Mayor Gets Cheated-This happens if you have a high rating with Maria, whether you are married or not. You enter the left side of the village, and see the mayor and his wife talking about how they gave all of their money to someone. The wife says that they sould get another job and not worry Maria. Exiting into the crossroads, you see Maria and the con man, talking about his ethics for taking the mayor's money. Maria gives him a gold pendant as an attempt to be friendly , and the conman leaves. She talks to you about wether he is happy or not, say he is not happy. Maria leaves. The next day, when you open your mailbox you will get a letter from the con man, and recieve the gold pendant. Talk to Maria, she takes the gold pendant and seems happy. Maria Gets Cheated#1-Entering the left side of the village from the top entrace leading from the main village, you will see Ann and Maria by the library. There are two watermelons there, which Maria was fooled into buying. Ann lectures her about saying No, and asks you if you'd like to buy the watermelons. Say yes, and Ann gives you a watermelon and keeps one for herself, and they both leave. *Maria Gets Cheated#2-Entering the left side of the village by any entrace, you see Maria talking to the con man. He tries to convince her to buy some cosmetic soap, and Maria refuses. Eventually Harris comes along and asks what is going on, the con man tells him to mind his own business, since he's trying to make Maria beautiful. Harris tells him that Maria is already beautiful and chases him away. Maria thanks Harris, and leaves. Bug on Karen-Entering the Carpenter's area, you see Maria and Karen. Karen yells at Maria to get a bug off of her. Maria dusts it off, and tells Karen that it kind of resembles her. Karen gets angry and leaves. Maria says that she didn't mean that in a bad way, just that her hair looked like the cool looking feelers on the bug. Ann Helps Out-Entering the Bakery, you are greeted by Jeff, who tells you that Elli has the day off, and is teaching Ann how to cook. You can hear Elli yelling at Ann, saying she messed up and would have to start again for the 5th time. Ann says that it's fine the way it is. Jeff looks embarrassed. Moondrop Wine-Entering the mountain, you see Karen and Popuri. Popuri gives Karen some Moondrops, and Karen says she will make them into wine. Popuri laughs and says that everything Karen has turns into wine. She mentions that she'd like to try some of the wine when it's made. Caterpillars-Entering the village, you see Maria and Popuri. Popuri gives Maria a package of caterpillars she took off of her flowers. Maria asks if it's really OK, Popuri says that she doesn't like them eating her flowers. Maria(I'm a little unsure about this part)says that caterpillars need to eat flowers to live, and Popuri says that she has to get rid of them to give the flowers a chance. Maria says she's mean, and leaves. *Plump Girls-Entering the Bakery, you see Popuri and Elli. Popuri orders some pie, and Elli wonders how she can eat so much and not gain any weight. Elli goes into the kitchen, and Jeff says that girls shouldn't diet, they're better off a little plump. Popuri jokes that that's the way he likes them, and Jeff blushes. Elli comes back with the pie. *Cliff meets Cliff-Entering the grassy area of the Ranch, you see Cliff, the rival, beside Cliff, the horse. Ann rushes over and asks what he's doing there, Cliff says something to do with the fact that they have the same name, and might be kindred spirits. Ann says that her horse isn't a thing like him, and takes it away. *The Love Letter-Entering the left side of the village, you see Harris by the library's mailbox. He starts to leave, and Maria comes out of the library. She asks him to take another letter, he takes it and begins to leave. He stops and tells Maria that it has no address on it. Maria blushes and says it's for him. She leaves, and Harris looks flustered.. *Gone Fishing-Entering the mountain, you see Elli and Jeff by the river, fishing. Suddenly, Jeff gets a bite, but it gets away, leaving him all wet. Elli giggles and says he looks better with his hair down. Jeff asks what she said, Elli says Never Mind. *Stupid-Entering the Bar, you see Karen crouched down, and Kai beside her. Kai asks her is she's alright. Karen looks sleepy, and calls him Stupid. She gets up, calls him stupid again, and leaves. *Laws of Nature-Entering the Carpenter's area, you see Ann and Cliff. Ann is holding a rabbit, and Kain is on Cliff's shoulder. The rabbit is Kain's food, but Ann doesn't want him to hurt it. Cliff tells Ann that Kain needs to eat animals to stay alive, but Ann ignores him and releases the rabbit into the forest. She leaves, and Cliff tells Kain that he'll have to share some fish with him. Stale Candy-Entering the Carpenter's area, you see Ann by the tree, leaning over. Talk to her, she tells you that she sees an acorn in some rabbit droppings. She says that the rabbit was hiding the acorn, but forgot about it and the acorn will grow into a tree. Gray comes along and says that it reminds him of Ann, who leaves her candy in the cupboard and lets it go stale. Ann gets angry, and they both leave. -------------------------- 9. The Festivals -------------------------- 1st of Spring:New Year's Festival-Town Square A fun little festival where you get to see your drinking capacity. Talk to anyone and they will give you a drink. If you haven't drank at all, you'll pass out immediatly. But if you have, you see how many people you can talk to before fainting. After someone is done drinking, talk to them again, and they'll leave. Some will have more than one drink (Elli, Maria, Mayor's Wife) and others will have full-blown drinking contests ( Karen, Midwife, Mayor, Kai ) Unfortunatly you can't get everyone to leave, since Gray doesn't go and the Buyer and Carpenter don't drink. But, it's funny, and if you get everyone out, you can go home safely. 8th of Spring:Sowing Festival-Town Square Whoever was chosen to be King at the Harvest Festival the previous year gets to ride up in a hot air balloon with a partner of their choice. Everyone else gets a balloon filled with seeds to float into the sky. On your first year there isn't much you can do here. Talk to everybody about the festival, and talk to Lillia to get your balloon. In future years, when you're chosen to be King, you can pick a girl or one of the rivals to take up in the balloon with you, although most don't like it. If you're good friends with the guy who's King, he might ask you to ride in the balloon. 17th of Spring:Horse Race-Town Square One of the biggest and most important festivals in the game, although it not really a festival. If your horse is big enough, the ranch owner will ask you to enter in the race. When you get there, you can't go to the race track until the second race for some reason. Talk to the mayor's wife to buy tickets to bet on the races, unless it's the race you're in. You can be sensible and bet on the race with the highest odds or be greedy and bet on the race with the lowest odds. Remember, the number shown is multiplied by the number of medals you bet. Be greedier still and cheat on the race by pressing b when you've selected your medals and not talk to the mayor's wife again. Your bets still count, but you don't pay any money. Once you've done placing your bets you can talk to some of the people in the square or buy something to eat from the buyer. Stand and wait or run around in circles until the first race starts. Watch the races if you're not in them, and talk to the mayor afterwards if you won some medals to get prizes, if you like. After the first race you get to go to the track, where everyone else is standing. You can talk to everyone else and get encouragement if you're racing, and talk to the baker to get something to snack on. Talk to Ann, and if she tells you to calm down and not get excited, you're racing next. ----Racing---- Racing depends completly on how well you take care of your horse. If you brush it everyday, talk to it when it's young, ride it and call it, the horse will have lots of energy to race. It takes a few seasons of topnotch care to get your horse's full potential. Now, to make the horse run, press the a button at the speed you feel is best. Any will work OK. Going slow will ration out the energy of your horse so it won't get tired fast, and using up everything at the end will give you a large boost that might get you ahead. Going fast all the way actually works, since once you get far ahead of everyone else, it takes a while for everyone to catch up, hopefully before the race ends. The last only works well if the horse has a pretty good energy supply. --If you WON(Spoiler! Skip if you like)-- Ann's Dad, the mayor and the photographer will come over and congratulate you, and you'll get a picture taken. Ann comes over and thanks you personally, in a very cute scene:)-- --- If you lost, everyone will give you sympathy for the race. Ann looks a little disappointed.. 23rd of Spring:Flower Festival-Town Square Did you vote for the Goddess of the Flower Festival? Whoever you voted for will usually become Goddess, but several times it didn't work for me, so be cautious. Be sure not to vote for the girl you're going after, since you'll miss out on dancing with her. Anyway, when you get there, talk to everyone about the festival and flowers. If you have enough money, buy the power nut from the con man (guy with a black afro and sunglasses, by Lillia in the right hand corner), and don't worry, because it's real. Buy some pink cat mints from Lillia if you like, and the bottle from Rick. The bottle can hold medicine and water from your pond, but you don't need it to buy drinks from the stores. Wait awhile and soon the girls will come out. Talk to the girls to get a flower, and talk to the goddess and compliment her about her looks. Talk to the mayor and he will announce the dance. Talk to a girl and ask her to dance, if you're trying to get her to like you. 1st of Summer:Fireworks Festival If you're friends with any of the girls, they will come over to your farm at various times in the day and invite you to watch the fireworks. Go to the place where they are after dark. Here's a quick guide to where they'll be.. Elli:Bakery. The door will open a little while after dark. Popuri:Mountain, by the old couple's restaurant. Climb the tree by the carpenter's house by pressing A to get up the mountain if the bridge is broken. Ann:Ranch. Go into the grassy area to see her. Karen:Beach. Before you go past the fence into the green ranch, go right to find the entrance to the beach. Maria:Town Square. This appears to be the default place to go if you don't have a girl, since it's set up like a festival. Lots of townspeople are there, you can buy snacks from the buyer, and Rick is selling the bottle if you missed it in the Flower Festival. 9th of Summer:Vegetable Festival-Town Square The Mayor and his Wife are at the steps to the town square. give the Mayor a vegetable you saved to enter, or go without one. When you get in, talk to everyone as usual. The veggie you submitted is by the potion shop dealer on the table. Stu and Kent have an argument about vegetables. Tell them you're not picky about food, so Kent will follow your advice. After a little while they'll announce the winner. The only way I know to win is to submit a strawberry. I've always won with a strawberry and lost with any other vegetable. You can't submit a summer crop since nothing will be fully grown by then. Anyway, you don't win anything, so don't sweat it. 17th of Summer:Firefly Festial-Beach Go after dark. Everyone will have shining flowers with fireflies in them. The point of this festival is to lead the spirits of the dead back to heaven, so everyone talks mournfully. Talk to Kent and Stu twice, they will ask their grandfather about their parents. Karen is on the wharf if you didn't notice her. After a while, everyone will put their flowers in the sea and float them off. Do you have a girl with a very high rating? She may ask you to walk her home. 24th of Summer:Sea Festival-Beach Yay, you get to go swimming! Race against your rivals for a prize. Watch out for Kai and Cliff, possibly Gray, they are the best swimmers. Press A really fast and steady to win. I don't know about you, but I've found the best way to win is to let go of the controller and press with your finger straight down on the button. You get a picture if you win. 4th of Fall:Cow Festival-Ranch If you have a full grown cow, the ranch owner will ask you to enter the day before. Kent will come on the 2nd and tell you which cow he thinks will win. Anyway, at the festival, you can drink some of the milk on the table and talk to everyone about cows and milk. To win, your cow must be well cared for: brushed, talked to and fed everyday. Your prize is that your cow starts giving gold milk, which sells for a whole lot of money. If you keep your cow outside, some girls will come along the next day to take a picture of it, and the old couple that goes to the races may come by, too. 12th of Fall:Harvest Festival-Town Square Finally, here's your chance to become king. When you get there, talk to everyone, as usual, about food and the fall. Some people ask you to try stuff, tell Ann her vegetables are good. Maria might get you to try something Elli taught her to cook, but for some reason you can't respond to her. I have been able to in the past, but I don't know what I did to make it happen. Odder still, Popuri seems happy if you say her salad tastes strange. Karen will come if you're good friends with her, and will ask you to try her stamina juice. She seems happy at both responses, but it's best to play it safe and compliment her. Elli will silently come out, so you have to watch for her. Talk to her and she will give you some cake. Does it have a coin inside? If it does, you're the new king. If it doesn't, the mayor will announce who the new king is. Pick a girl to dance with again, and raise her happiness towards you. 21st of Fall:Egg Festival-Village A neat little game where you can win a prize. It's pretty easy. Talk with everyone for encouragement, and talk to the mayor to get it started. He will show you a colored egg. Your job is to look in all of the little boxes around the village for one the same color. There's a strategy to this. It's good to check around before it starts to get a good idea of here the boxes are. Follow my directions, and you should get to every box before the time runs out. First, go to the left of the mayor, there is a box beside the steps. Go down, there is a box in front of the art store, and one to the right of it. Go down, there is one by the bakery. Cut through to the flower shop, there is one beside it. Go up from where that box was, and far right, there is one by the greenhouse. Go left and behind the church, and down, there is one to the left of it. Go left still and there is one by the bar. That's it. Repeat each time. Did you win? Talk to everyone afterwards, and exit the village. 28th of Fall:Horse Race-Town Square Another chance to win the horse race! Is your horse strong enough? See the last horse race for info, nothing's changed. 10th of Winter:Thanksgiving Festival Not much of a festival, especially if you don't have high ratings with girls. If you haven't got a green heart with a girl yet, go around to their houses. Ann and Popuri will be at the door, and Maria and Elli will be inside. Karen is at the beach. Talk to them about the festival, then talk to them again to get a piece of cake. With Karen, she will ask if you'd like her to give you a piece of cake, say yes, she will be happy that you're honest. If you have a green heart with a girl, stay at home and she will come over and give you some cake. 19th of Winter:Dog Race-Town Square Have you been treating your dog with care? If so, you may have a shot at winning the dog race. Like the horse race, Ann's dad will ask you to enter the day before. When you get there, there's nobody around to talk to, so you'll just have to stand around until it starts. Betting is the same as the horse race, and the cheating still applies:) After the first race, talk to everyone in the track like last time, and buy something from the Baker. Wait around until your race comes up.The dog race is completly based on your treatment of your dog, since you can't control him in the race. If you've been calling him, picking him up and walking him around, and putting food in his dish he will run faster. If you win, you get a picture and a trophy. If you're in need of lumber, try to win some medals to get some, although you can only get up to 1000 pieces. 23rd of Winter:Star Night Festival Like the Fireworks, here's a chance to spend some time with the girl of your choice. Popuri is at the mountain summit, and Karen is at the beach, like last time, but if Elli, Ann or Maria are your choice, then you get to do something a little different. They are playing a concert in church. Go to the church after dark, and many people will be there. Talk to everyone about the performance, wish the girls luck, and talk to the priest to get the show started. Watch a short performace, and when it's over, talk to everyone except your girl. They will leave. Say Good Night to the other two girls, and Let's Go to yours. You will go outside to watch the stars. 27th of Winter:Spirit Festival-Town Square Are you the king(From the year before)? If you are, the mayor will ask you to choose 3 people to join you in a performance. Be sure to have bought an ocarina from the craft shop before the festival. Remember that the mayor says the festival is the next day, which is a typo, it is on the day that he comes over. Talk to either a girl or a rival and invite them. If you aren't King , are you friends with the guy who is? It you are, he will invite YOU to the festival. If you aren't, then you can just go to the festival to watch. In any event, be at the square by 7 pm to chase the spirits away. 30th of Winter:New Year's Eve-Church or Bar At night, ring in the new year with the friends of your choice. Here's who will be at each place.. Bar-Karen, Ann, Rick, Kai, Cliff, Kent, Stu, Ann's Dad, Gray, Buyer Church-Elli, Popuri, Maria, Harris, Jeff, Midwife Depending on your choice, the process is the same, talk to everyone, and then leave. The bartender or the priest will ask you if you're leaving, say yes. The girl with the highest rating for you will ask you to watch the sunrise. Say yes, and you'll both go to the mountain summit to watch the sun rise. 25th of the Season of your Choice:Your Birthday Not really a festival, but it is a special occasion. You know how you give the girls gifts for their birthdays? Well, now it's time they return the favor. If you have a girl with a green heart rating, she will come over to your house and give you a small gift, like cake or cookies. If you have a girl with a pink heart, though, she will give you a more important gift. These are the gifts each girl brings: Elli: An embroidered handkerchief. Popuri: Some potpourri. Karen: A charm bracelet. Ann: Some knit socks. Maria: A painting that gets hung over your bed. You can only get one gift from a girl per year. -------------------------- 10. Outside Work -------------------------- In your 1st year, you will be asked to do favors for different people. Here's how to do them right, what you get in return, and how it will affect you later. -Cow Sitting- On the last day of the 1st fall, the ranch owner will come over to your house. He will ask if you could take care of some cows for a few days. Tell him you will. The next day, he will come to your house with a woman(Mrs.Mana) and her child, the owners of the cows. They thank you for taking the cows, and the ranch owner warns you to take good care of them, because they will be sold. Go into your barn, and you will see 3 cows. Taking Care-Do you have animals already? If you don't, this will be new to you. Buy the brush from Rick if you haven't already, this is crucial for the job. Talk to, brush and feed the cows every day. If you enter your barn after 8am, you will see Mrs. Mana's son standing in the top left corner of it. Talk to him and give him a gift for good luck. Mrs. Mana will be visiting the bar after dark, so go and talk to her and give her a gift too, just to be nice. Keep this up for a few days, and they will come over to your farm to thank you. The ranch owner will follow them. He will tell you how you did, and take the cows back. The End Result-You get some money, a couple 1000g or so, if you did well. The ranch owner will remember this and it will boost up your end evaluation. -Bridge Building- In the 1st fall, about 5 or so days before the horse race, the head carpenter will come over to your house and ask you to help building the bridge in the mountain. The next day, go to the mountain and he will be there. He will ask if you will help building the bridge. Say yes, and you will see a brief clip of you doing some work. Then you will see the boss again, and he gives you 1000g for your work. It is now 3:00. Keep doing this everyday until the 26th, when the bridge is finally complete. The End Result-You get 1000g per day, and the head carpenter will give you a higher evaluation for the work. ------------------------- 11. Upgrading Your Home -------------------------- Tired of your drab little house? Want to take a bath without trudging your way up the mountain? Want something else to do in the winter? All you need is some extra cash and a load of lumber. Visit the carpenters in the mountain, and they will do it for you. Here's the different upgrades, what they cost, what they do and whether you should get them or not. Scale of Need: 1(Don't need) to 5(You have to get this) Kitchen-450pc./5000g/Scale:5 This gets added on to the left side of your house. You need it to get married, and you can keep spare food in the fridge. Bathroom-350pc./3000g/Scale:3 This is added onto the corner of your house. Get into it by the kitchen, or outside if you don't have one. It has a bath, which prevents sickness, and a toilet. If you get sick a lot, you should get it, but if you don't, it's not really necessary. Stairway-pc./g/Scale:1 A set of stairs, that leads to the roof. I still haven't found any use for it, and it doesn't look that good. Greenhouse-580pc./30,000g/Scale:5 It takes a ton of lumber and money, but it's worth it. You can plant any kind of vegetable year-round, you can work as long as you like since the clock doesn't run, and you can plant strawberries in winter. The disadvantages are that you can't bring your horse inside, and they can get destroyed if there's a typhoon. Log Terrace-pc./7500g/Scale:2 It's a deck that gets built in the back. Not much use, but it's nice looking, and is a place for everyone to sit on your evaluation. Baby Bed-pc./g/Scale:5 If you want a baby, you have to buy this, so it can have a place to sleep. ------------------------------ 12. Secrets and Special Tasks ------------------------------ -The Mine:In Depth- Every Winter, from the 8th to the 30th, you can enter the mine. To get there, go to the carpenter's area and into the cave, and go left. There is a door there. Talk to the guy in front of it, and he will let you in. To mine, simply take out your hoe and till the area. Sometimes you will dig up something, sometimes you won't. Sometimes you might find a hole which leads to another level. Here's what is on each level. 1st Level~ Coin-You instantly get 10g. Iron Ore- Sell it for a bit of money. Nobody really wants it as a gift. Moonlight Stone- You can sell it for more money, or give it to Rick as a small gift. 2nd Level~ Pontata Root-Give it to the potion shop dealer to get the 3rd potion, or just as a gift. Blue Rock-You can sell it for a lot of money, or give it to the Craft Shop dealer to get the blue pot. Rare Metal-Give one to Rick and he'll be really happy. Or sell it for 1000g. 3rd Level~ Power Berry Kamizadori-A weather vane that used to belong to Rick. Give it back to him. ~The Spirit Tree~ One of the bigger quests you will go on. Completing it will get a picture, and the whole vineyard will like you more, especially Karen. I think, I'm not sure, that you can't do this if you are married. 1.Talk to the bartender a lot. Eventually, he will give you a bottle of wine that Karen's grandmother made, before the Spirit Tree died, called the "Door to Heaven". Notice that Karen and especially Kai recognize it. 2.Talk to the elves every day. Eventually, they will notice the wine, and will tell you to ask the Goddess about it. 3.Get something you produced on your farm, preferably something cheap, and put it in your rucksack. You can use eggs, milk, wool or a vegetable. Go to the area left of the carpenter's house, with the small bridge and pond, between 9am and 5pm. Stand on the bridge facing the pond, take out your object and throw it in. The goddess will appear. Ask her for the grape spirit. You will then go to the vineyard and revive the spirit tree. Now the Spirit tree has been revived. Here's how to get the picture. 1.In one of the early days of fall, when you go to sleep, you will see an image of the goddess. She tells you that the Kiefu fairies have returned. 2.Karen must be at a pink heart, you can't be married and it must be fall. One day, coming back from the farm after dark, Karen will be there. She will ask her to come with her, ask her what is going on, she tells you to follow her. You go to the vineyard, where there are what looks like colored fireflies in the grapes. Karen tells you that the Kiefu fairies are kissing the grapes, which makes them of much higher quality. This is why the vineyard couldn't make the same kind of wine Karen's grandmother used to make, since the Kiefu fairies were gone. Karen is very happy, the vineyard is saved, and she starts to dance. 3.The next day, you get a picture in the mail. In the winter(whether you got the picture or not) Karen or even Kai will come over and give you some of the new wine. Kai thanks you. -The Power Nuts- Power Nuts are special things that increase your work capacity per day. There are special things you must do to get them, and they only appear once in that situation. To keep track of how many you have got, there is a chart in your kitchen, if you have one. They look like apples, and you automatically eat it once you get it. 1.)It is a prize at the Egg Festival, 1st year 2.)Purchase it from the con man at the Flower Festival 3.)First, plant about 10 3x3 rows of MoonDrop and Pink CatMint flowers, in around equal amounts. When they bloom, Stu will come over to your house and ask you for one, in exchange for some marbles. Give him the flower, and go to the elves' cave(In Carpenter's area, enter the hole in the side of the mountain, then press a by the hole behind the elf) 4.)In the Winter, the pond in the mountain entrance is frozen. Walk across it and stand in front of the big boulder behind it. Hit the boulder with a gold hammer and you will get a power nut. 5.)From the time you get up, do NOT PRESS B. Take an offering (eggs, vegetable, etc.) to the goddess pond, and throw it in. The goddess will appear and give you 3 wishes, wish for strength. Since you haven't used any energy, the goddess gives you a power nut instead. 6.)When fishing off the dock at the beach, you might catch a power nut. 7.)Throw a medium-sized fish into the pond at the mountain entrance. A water imp will appear and give you the power nut. 8.)*Special Blue Power Nut*Throw a large-sized fish into the same pond. The imp will appear and give you the blue power nut, which prevents you from getting sick in the rain. 9.)When tilling your farm, you might dig up one. 10.)When digging 3 levels down in the mine, you might find one. 11.)If you are good friends with Basil, when he comes back from his trip in the spring he may give you one. ~Pictures~ In the book on your desk, there is a picture album. Upon completing a certain task, or being at an event, you will get a picture. Also, each girl has a picture which you get when you get her at a pink heart. Here are all of the different pictures you can get, and how to get them. Once you've completed the task, look in your mailbox the next day for the picture. 1.Picture With Your Grandfather: This is in your album from the beginning. 2.King at the Seed Planting Festival: When you become king and attend the Sowing festival, you get this picture. 3.Celebrating Victory at Local Horse Race: Win the horse race to get this picture. 4.With a SightSeer: Win the Cow Festival and keep your cow outside. The 3 out of town girls you see at the horse races will come by and take a picture(if you say yes). 5.Winner at Local Swim Meet: Win the Sea Festival. 6.Celebrating Completion of the Hot springs:Work for at least 1 or 2 days on the hot springs to get this picture. 7.Winner at the Dog Race: If your dog wins at the dog races, you get this. 8.Wedding, Outside The Church: Get married, and you will get this. 9.A Rabbit in Winter:Ann's picture. 10.Firefly Night:Maria's picture. 11.Blue-Mist Flower:Popuri's picture. 12.Moondrop Potion:Elli's picture. 13.Dance of the Kiefu Fairy: Karen's picture. 14:After the Baby was Born:Get your wife to have a baby, and you get this picture. 15:Party Picture 16:Celebrating Completion of Home Extension:Get every house extension to get this picture. ~Recipes~ Part of your evaluation has to do with how many recipes you've collected. To get a recipe, you have to give a certain food item to a certain person. These can't be used for anything, they are just for collecting, and for fun. The fun of it is experimenting with different foods and people, seeing if you can guess what it is from what they say, and having one pop up unexpectedly. However, some of them won't appear until the person is good friends with you, or if it is then wrong season. There are 34 recipes in total. To see the list of recipes you've collected so far, it is on a poster in your kitchen, if you have one. If you don't want to figure them out on your own, here is a list of people, and their recipes. This is the order:Person-Food-Recipe Elli -Egg/Milk -Bread Pudding Ann -Potato -Mashed Potatoes Popuri -Strawberry -Strawberry Jam Maria -Cabbage -Rolled Cabbage Karen -Strawberry -Strawberry Champagne Jeff -Milk -Cinnimon Milk Tea Cliff -Egg -Spice Tea Gray -Egg -Stuffed Omelet Harris -Potato -Potato Beef Kai -Veryberry -Veryberry Wine Kent -Egg -Spa-Poached Egg Stu -Strawberry -Strawberry Dog May -Potato -Potato Pancake Potion Shop Dealer -Herb - Elli's Grandmother -Walnut -Walnut Cake(called 'herb rice cake' on list) Lillia -Tomato - Basil -Corn -Corn Pasta Ann's Dad -Corn -Corn Fritters Karen's Dad -Grapes -Steamed clams with wine Karen's Mom -Tomato - Mayor -Potato - Mayor's Wife -Turnip - Rick -Milk -Handmade butter Priest -Tomato - Saibara - Bartender -Grapes -Hot Spicy Wine Midwife -Eggplant - Head Carpenter -Mushroom -Mushroom Rice Carpenter -Fish - Fisherman -Fish - Elves -Mushroom -Mushroom Salsa Old Man on Summit - Old Woman on Summit- Buyer -Tomato -Tomato soup ~Rumors~ Since this game is so full of secrets, many rumors pop up. Some are true, some aren't. I'll examine the most frequent ones. Channel 4:According to the rumor, the elves will fix it for you. Several people have contacted Natsume about this, and they have said that the channel 4 was taken out of the game, due to the many glitches that surrounded it. This is belivable, since the game was rushed out for Christmas, so Natsume decided just to take it out instead of trying to correct it. You can also see examples of these glitches in Channel 3. So, the rumor isn't true. The Second Picture Album:The rumor says that once you get all of the pictures, you will get it somehow, either by the elves or the crafts shop, or else you get it before Elli's grandmother dies. Although I haven't tested it, there is strong evidence against it. Several people have tried it and said it isn't true. Also, I've noticed that some of the pictures sound impossible, like your horse giving birth, when it's a male. I highly doubt it's true. The Jumper: The rumor says that during your 5th summer, you can catch a black fish called the Jumper. Like the other rumors, I've heard it's not true, but there isn't much evidence, and not that many people have tried it. It's still up in the air, but I'm skeptical. Cheat on Your Wife: One of the most outlandish rumors of all. Apparantly, you're supposed to give a certain amount of items in order to the Mayor's Wife, and then you and her will spend the night together. After that, your wife hates you, you are talked about on tv, etc. The rumor comes from a website, that contains "screenshots" of the situation. The pictures are obviously faked, the lettering doesn't match the usual style, it looks like it was just typed in, and each picture has nothing original to the situation in it. Don't believe this rumor. The Secret Festivals/Bamboo Float: This rumor is true! There is actually the Bamboo float and another secret festival. These are festivals similar to the fireworks and starry night, nobody else comes, it's just you and your girl. To get to these, you must be married. On the 7th of summer, at night, when you come back to your farm you see your wife there. talk to her and go with her to the river, where you float pieces of bamboo with a wish of your choice on it ( Animals, weather or family). The second is sometime in fall, a similar process, instead you go to the summit with your wife and baby(if you have one) to watch the full moon. ~Glitches and Other Things~ Sadly, there are many glitches in this game. Some are harder to find than others, and have different results. This list doesn't include all of the spelling mistakes, since there's so many that I can't list, I'll just list the most noticable ones. - Occasionally, when trying to view channel 3, the game will freeze up. - When spending the fireworks with Ann, and viewing Maria getting cheated by the con man, the text box will be at the top of the screen and be a lot sharper. - When there are lots of animals or people in one place, the game will slow down, especially in the sowing and cow festivals. - Sometimes when showing things to the elves, the text box picture will be of Saibara instead. - Sometimes when talking to people, the text will overlap. - If your wife gets too close to the fridge when you're about to open it, you will talk to her, and the fridge's door will be open. It stays that way until you leave the room. - Popuri, TWICE, calls your wife "him" or "he". -------------------------- 13. The Girls -------------------------- A very detailed guide to each and every girl, their likes and dislikes, their different situations and how to get them to like you. It also lists their locations, days off, favorite gifts, what to do for situations and their rivals. I have gone through the game with every single one, so each has as much information as the last. Note:Every girl dislikes insects(except maria), grass, lumber, mined objects and fodder. Also, things like the pictures and dreams won't happen once you are married, with a couple of exceptions. Heart Ratings:Each girl has a little heart in their text boxes. The color is different depending on how much she likes you. The color takes a while to change, about a season, if you talk to her and give her gifts everyday. The fastest I ever got a girl to a pink heart was about mid autumn, 1st year. To get a girl's heart to change really fast, talk to her everyday, give her her absolute favorite gift everyday, and do everything with her. Speeds differ with every girl, since their favorite gift might not be easy to get, like wool or a vegetable you have to grow. Here are the different hearts, and what the girl will act like around you in them. White Heart:You're a stranger to her. She will talk about her business around you, or about nothing at all. She might even be mean to you. When a girl is almost at a blue heart, she will stop by your farm and give you a gift. Blue Heart:You're casual friends. She'll talk about what she likes a bit, and what she does. She will also come to your farm occasionally. Green Heart:You're good friends. She will start to do stuff with you, and talk about her hopes and dreams. Yellow Heart:She kinda likes you, and will be a bit flirty. She'll talk about her history and what goes on in her life. She will ask you to walk her home from the Fifefly Festival. Pink Heart:She really has a crush on you, and is very friendly. She will talk about the regular things, and might even talk about you. She'll be REALLY flirty when you spend time with her on the Fireworks/Starry Night/New Year's Eve festivals, and will cuddle with you, or give you a kiss. She's ready for you to give her the blue feather. General Rules:Talk to the girl as much as possible, preferably every day. Try to give her gifts as often as you can, or show her something she likes(Bugs for Maria, for example). Listen to what she says and try to do what she hints about. Become friends with people she is close to, and answer her questions positively. Dance with her at every festival, and spend the Fireworks, Starry Night and New Year's Eve festivals with her. Give her the music box. Find out when her birthday is and give her a gift. Pick her for stuff like the Sowing and Spirit festival, if you are king. Also, her heart rate can go down if your animals die. Music Box:Go to your tree, at the top right corner of your farm. Stand in front of it and press A to get the treasure map. Then, go to your doghouse, to the right side of it, and go down in a straight line, until you get around where you think the tree is. Hoe a few squares on the line to give you an idea of where the line is, then go to your tree, to the bottom of it. Walk in a straight line until you get to where you hoed the ground. Hoe on the tilled square in front of you for about 10 times until you pick up something and put it into your backpack. Talk to Rick for a few days and eventually he will notice the object and fix it for you. It is a music box. Talk to the girl you like, and she will notice it. Give it to her. It will make her like you more. Here's a quick map- house tree | --------- dog # # # # # house- # # # O # # # # # # --------- # dirt 0 spot where the music box is Rivals: Rivals are the guys who you're competing with for a certain girl. However, the only way they will start to go after the girl is if you're friends with them. If you talk to them frequently, over a long period of time, they will eventually marry her if you don't first. It's important to know who each girl's rival is, and not talk to him so often. Scenes: Sprained Ankle:You will see her lying down someplace, and she will tell you she hurt her foot. Ignore what every other guide says, DO NOT CALL FOR HELP!! This seems like a no-brainer, since your RIVAL comes to her rescue, and hogs all of the glory. Instead, carry her home yourself. The Dream:Dreams ALWAYS occur a day or two after you get a yellow heart with a girl. When you go to sleep at night, a text box decsribes a strange scene that has to do with the scene that will play out the next day. However, some do not play out if it is the wrong season, or something else may occur on that day. Sickness:On a rainy or snowy day, when you go to the girl's house, whoever is in charge will tell you she is sick. Ask to visit her, and you will get into her room. Talk to her and look at her stuff, and she will thank you when you leave. Pictures:Each girl has a picture that will get taken when you play out a scene with them. The pictures only happen once you have a red heart with them, which will most likely be your second year, except perhaps for Elli and Ann. Confession:Sometime in your second year, when you have a girl with a red heart, she will eventually tell you that she likes you, and is expecting a blue feather. --ELLI-- ... Favorite Gift:Eggs or Milk Also likes:Fish(medium or large) Dislikes:Forest animals Likes Dog:Yes Usually At:Bake Shop Can also be found:Mountain entrance,Flower Shop,Carpenter's area, Beach dock, hedge outside bakery Days off:Monday Rival:Jeff(Bakery Master) Birthday:1st of Fall .... Bio:Elli is an excellent cook, and has won the envy of many other girls. She is a little bit plump because of that, and is jealous of thinner girls like Popuri. She has had many tragedies in her life, with her Father and Mother, but keeps a positive attitude despite that. She is very sensible and orderly, and seems to be the most concerned with becoming a good wife.. .... How to Get:Try to save for a chicken, and start raising a lot of them. Elli likes eggs a lot. Once you get a cow you can give her milk, too, but it's not really worth it since she likes eggs just as much as milk, and eggs are cheap to give away. If you get time, fish for her, too. This will make the Greg the Fisherman, the guy who gave you the fishing rod, impressed and he will become friends with you. Since Elli is friends with him, she will like it that you like to fish too. Give her any fish you catch. You'll know she notices you if she introduces herself. .... Questions she might spring: Do you like plump Girls? Your Answers:Hmm.. or Hmmmmm... My Suggestion:Your guess is as good as mine. I got a nice response from the second one, but I'm still puzzled. .... -Sprained Ankle:She will sprain her ankle by the river, in the mountain entrance. -Dream:Go to the left side of the village after the dream. You will see May trying to get Stu to play house, although Stu thinks they're too old to play house. Elli shows up beside you and talks about how she played house and made mud cookies as a kid. She asks you if you ever got sick eating mud cookies, say yes. She says she thought so, and the scene ends. -Picture:In the fall, enter your farm at night, one day Elli will be there. She asks you if you're busy, say no, she will take you to the mountain, in the goddess pond. It's to make moondrop potion. You and her stir the bottle of water until it turns gold. Elli says that her grandmother was right about the potion only working if the partners are.. She trails off and thanks you for coming. -Confession:Go into the bakery. Elli is standing there, not walking around as usual. Talk to her normally, and leave out the back way( where she is facing) and Elli will stop you and ask if she can talk to you. Say yes, she will take you outside and tell you that she likes you, and asks if you like her. Say yes, and she gives you a kiss, and tells you that she can't wait for the day when you give her a blue feather. --ANN-- .... Favorite Gift:Wool, any size Also likes:Corn Dislikes:Forest Animals Likes Dog:Very Much Usually At:Ranch, in the field Can also be found:Rick's, Mountain entrance, Carpenter's area, goddess pond, vineyard Rainy Days:Inside Barn Days off:Thursday, Sunday Rival:Cliff Birthday:14th of Summer .... Bio:Although she is rough, she has a soft spot for animals. She loves working on the farm, taking care of the cows and horses. Ann has a sweet tooth, and likes any kind of candy, even stale. Knitting is her hobby, and she enjoys getting extra wool for her projects. She spends her free time in the mountains, feeding the wildlife and watching rare birds. Sadly, her mother passed away when she was young, and was taken care of by her brother Gray, since her father had little time away from the ranch. She looks up to Gray, although he is aggressive and rarely talks. She is wary of men, and not easy to win over, although she wishes to marry someone who can win the horse race.. .... How to Get:Ann is a bit more difficult to get than the other girls, since it's really hard to get something she likes. You can't get wool for her unless you've bought a sheep and wait for it to grow up, and then it takes 7 days between growing more wool. Corn takes a very long time to grow, as well. But, there are a few ways to speed it up with her. You should try to win the horse race and dog race, buy lots of animals, and show her your dog. If you become friends with her, she will come over to your farm and tell you how your horse is doing. .... Questions she might spring: Do you like sweets? Your Answers:Yes/No My Suggestion:Say yes! Ann likes sweets, so she'll be happy you two have something in common. .... Situations: -Sprained ankle-She sprains her angle in the crossroads, the area that has paths to all of the different areas. -Dream-Go to the carpenter's area in the mountain. Ann is there, talk to her, she is holding a baby bird that fell out of the tree. She keeps it warm in her shirt and tells you not to look. She asks you if you ever fell while looking at birds, say you think so, and she will be happy. -Picture:In the morning, Ann will be at your farm. She will ask you to come watch something. Go with her, she will show you the Pika Bunny. -Confession:Entering the ranch, Ann will ask you is you like her, say yes, she asks you to prove it. You hold out your arms for her, but she slaps you down. "Not like that! With a blue feather!" --POPURI-- .... Favorite Gift:Flowers Also likes:Strawberries, Full Moon berries Likes Dog:Yes Usually At:Outside of Flower Shop Can also be found:Bake Shop, mountain entrance, goddess pond, carpenter's area, cliff above carpenter's area, by old couple's restaurant on the summit Rainy Days:Inside Flower Shop Days off:Sunday Rival:Gray Birthday:22nd of Spring .... Bio:Popuri has a passion for flowers and all things beautiful. She has a reputation for being very beautiful herself, as well as happy and carefree. She is a tad controlling of the family business, and easily gets angry at her mother for making mistakes. Her life is generally without problems, so she can take time to visit the mountain and look at the wild flowers, or stop off at the bake shop for some cake. Popuri's only change in life is when her father leaves for the south in the fall, looking for rare plants and warmer climate. She doesn't like it when he leaves, and feels angry that he gets to be someplace warm in the harsh winter months. As for looking for love, Popuri is not very aggressive with the local men. She is a bit lonely for more male roles in her life, especially a husband.. .... How to Get:Befriend her mother and father, and give her wild flowers whenever possible. Grow many flowers on your farm, especially Pink Cat Mints. In Fall from the 10th to the 12th, you can find full moon berries between the trees in front of the old couple's restaurant on the mountain summit. Popuri likes these a lot. Get a greenhouse and grow her strawberries, since she likes those too. When you're king, definetly get her to be the flower goddess, since she loves the festival, and the costume. .... -Sprained Ankle:By the tree in the Carpenter's Area. -Dream: Go the carpenter's area of the mountain. You will hear someone call for help. Go up to the tree at the back and you will see Popuri dangling from a cliff. Press A in front of the tree to climb up, and save her. She thanks you, and asks you if you remember something like this happening before, say yes. -Picture:In the 2nd Summer, there is a "Blue Mist Seed" in the flower shop. Buy it and exit the store. Popuri will stop you and take you to the goddess fountain where you plant the seed. She waters it and tells you to water the plant everyday, or it dies. Do so for a few days until it blooms. Popuri will be there when it does, and tells you that she hopes the butterflies will come. Come back the next day, and there will be an entomologist there, who admires the flower. Come back the day after, and she will be there, and so will a butterfly. Talk to her, and the entomologist will come and take a picture. On the last day of summer, Popuri might ask you to come watch the blue mist plant give off seeds. *Special Note* This picture is different from the others. Although it is a situation to get Popuri to like you, you can get it when you're married to anyone, have a low heart rating with her, and also every year after that. -Confession:She will be somewhere in the mountain, either by the tree or on the cliff, and talk to her, normally. She asks if she can ask you a question. Say yes, she will ask you is you like any of the girls. Say yes, she asks you who. Say Popuri, she will be surprised, and starts to leave, stops, and says that she likes you, too. --KAREN-- .... Favorite Gift:Grapes Also likes:Veryberry fruit, strawberries Dislikes:Fish, Animals Likes Dog:No Usually At:Bar Can also be found:Beach(sunday),Vineyard, Carpenter's area Days off:Sunday Rival:Kai Birthday:29th of Winter .... Bio:Karen is very brash and angry, and not quick to make friends. She argues constantly to her father, since she wants to leave the vineyard for the city. She currently has a job at the bar, and loves to drink. She enjoys grapes and other types of fruit which can be made into wine. Her other passion is dancing, and dreams of performing all over the world. Her favorite place to be is at the beach, a quiet place without many crowds. .... How to Get: Karen seems to be difficult at first, but she's surprisingly flirty once you get to know her. Ignore what she says about not talking to her, because that's the only way to get to know her. Give her veryberry fruits everyday in the Spring, and try to save some for Summer, since there's not much she likes then. Karen mentions liking tomatoes at the Vegetable Festival, but she doesn't give any special reaction to it, so don't bother. She loves to dance, so always pick her to dance at every festival. Revive the Spirit tree for her(Explained in the Side Quests section), and drink a lot of wine. Karen says herself that she loves guys who can drink, and outdrink her in the New Year's Festival to prove it. You'll notice her attidute towards you changing very quickly. At first she'll tell you not to talk to her, but after awhile she'll start to say "Ok, ok, see you." when you get to know her. She'll eventually tell you her name. You'll know she likes you when she says "See you later."(notice the expression on her face) .... -Sprained Ankle:In front of the wine making celler, in the vineyard. -Dream:Go to the barrel room in the vineyard, Karen will be there. She asks you if you'd like a tour of the room, say yes. You will go downstairs and Karen shows you the wine. Talk to her and she will ask you if you want to go back. Say yes, and you go upstairs again, but, the door is locked and you can't get out. Wait a little bit and Karen's dad will yell at you and let you out. You go outside and Karen leaves. -Picture:See side quests under "Spirit Tree" -Confession:At the beach, talk to her, she will ask you if you like her. Say yes. Ask her the same, she will say that she thought you already knew. --MARIA-- .... Favorite Gift:Cabbage Also likes:Insects Likes Dog:No Usually At:Library Can Also be found:Church, Mayor's house, outside the church, Mountain entrance, goddess pond, carpenter's area Days off:Monday, takes vacation in Summer and Winter Rival:Harris Birthday:11th of Winter .... Bio:Maria is very shy and reserved, and loves to read books. She is the Mayor's daughter, and runs the local library. Besides reading, she likes to visit the mountain in her spare time, and maybe draw a picture while she's there. Unlike most girls, Maria is fascinated by insects, and enjoys watching them while in the mountain. .... How to Get:She's hard to get to know in the beginning because she's so shy, but she tells you to visit her once in a while. So, go the library and talk to her every day. Read your mail carefully, since she takes vacations in Summer and Winter. If you really want to get her to like you quickly, then set aside a special garden of cabbages to give to her as gifts. This costs you a lot of money and time, though. If you don't mind waiting a while longer for her to get a pink heart, forget about the cabbage and stick to flowers and berries. Show her an insect now and then, since they make her happy. .... -Sprained Ankle:In the library, by the back bookshelves. -Dream:Go to the library, and Maria is at the back looking at the books, not at the desk. There is a book on the desk. Go up to it and Maria will tell you that it's not a library book, it's her's. She will ask you if you gave it to her, say yes, she says she was going to ask you before, but was too embarrassed. You leave the library, and it's night. -Picture:Someday before the Firefly festival, go to the farm after dark and Maria will be there. Agree to follow her and you will go to the goddess pond to watch the fireflies. -Confession:Leaving the library, Maria will stop you, and will ask you if you're busy. Say no, she will say that she likes you, and is very happy about that. She quickly leaves. ------Marriage Guide------ How To Get Married- There are two requirements for marriage. One, the girl you want to marry has to be at a pink heart. Two, you have to have a kitchen built to your home. Once you have both, in a few days a new item will appear at Rick's, the blue feather. Buy it for 980g, and set it to b. Press b in front of the girl you want to marry. You'll get that same "fairy dust" animation from the cow medicine and potion, and the girl will tell you that she will marry you. Now, you have to wait until Sunday. On Sunday, the wedding takes place. The next day, your girl will be standing next to the bed. Congratulations, you now have a wife. She now lives with you, and will always for the rest of your game, as long as you treat her well. The Relationship- Now that you're married, you have to start a bit of a new routine for yourself. Have you been working all night in your bachelor days? Or flirting with every girl in sight? Well, not any more. Here's what you need to do to keep up a good marriage and keep your wife happy. 1.Get into the habit of talking to her everyday. Not just once, too. You only need to talk about 2 different times per day, but here are all the different messages: 6am to 12pm-Special Message, if any (talk to her again)Helping out she did Normal, Repeating messages 12 to 3-Working in the afternoon 3 to 6-Cooking Dinner 6pm to 8-Welcome Home 8 to 9-Good Night And where she'll be: Am:6 to 8-Bedroom 8 to 12-Outside(The location is different depending on the girl) Pm:12 to 3-Bedroom(except Elli) 3 to 8-Kitchen 8 to 9-Bedroom(You should come home now.) 9 and on-Bedroom,already asleep(You've come home too late.) On rainy days, she stays inside the house, except for Ann, who goes in the barn. Somedays she goes "errand-running" and goes into town from 8am to 12pm. 2.Give her gifts often, if not everyday. 3.Go home before 9pm. The best time to come home for the night is at 8pm, since you'll be going to sleep at the same time. 4.During Festivals, always dance with your wife. If your wife becomes Goddess of the flower festival and you're not the king, the king will ask you to take his place in the dance. 5.Answer her questions positively. If she tells you she's worried, don't tell her not to worry, just pick the other answer. 6.Always return to your farm when it turns night, either by coming in after you're done in town or entering somewhere on your farm and exiting again. This is because your wife sometimes will ask you to do special things, like watching the moon together. Especially remember this on the Starry Night(If you're married to Popuri or Karen) and Fireworks festivals. 7.Very important:Write down special occasions when they happen, specifically your birthday, your anniversary, and your child's birthday. When your wife cooks you a big feast and you don't know what the occasion is, she will be upset. Special Occasions- Your Birthday, Anniversary and Child's Birthday: Come home after 5 but before 6 and go to the kitchen. Talk to your wife, and she will ask you what day it is. Tell her the correct occasion, she is happy and tells you that she prepared a big feast for you, which you see on the table. Stand in front of the food and press A to eat it, and eat all of it. The only thing you can't eat is the item your wife is standing in front of. Bamboo Float: On the 7th of summer, at night, you will see your wife standing by the shipping bin. Talk to her, she will tell you to come to the Bamboo Float. Say yes, you will go to the river, where you will write a wish of a piece of Bamboo:Animals, Family, or Weather. Full Moon Night: Sometime in the the fall, at night, you will see your wife outside by the shipping bin. Talk to her, and she will ask you if you want to watch the moon with her. Say yes, and you, her, and your child if you have one will go to the mountain summit to watch the full moon. Thanksgiving: Come home after 5pm but before 6pm and talk to your wife. She will give you a piece of cake. Helping Out- If you are being nice to your wife, she will help you out with farm work. The chores she does vary between the girls, but each one will help out with the chickens(Crating eggs/Feeding) She usually has two or more chores that she randomly picks from. Here are the wives and their work: Popuri: She waters random squares of hoed ground, vegetable or not. That means she doesn't water every square, and waters empty spaces. Elli:Crates/Feeds the chickens. Karen:Crates the eggs, and occasionally breaks a few of them. Maria:Removes weeds from the land. Ann:Crates/Feeds the chickens. ------Baby Guide------ How To- There is 1 reqirement to have a baby: You must get the carpenters to build you a baby bed in your house. To actually get a baby takes a little work. Remember the Blue Mist flower that would die if you didn't water it every day? This is similar. You must give your wife a gift every day. Eventually she'll start feeling strange, saying she's gained weight, isn't getting enough sleep, and is feeling hungrier. Keep up the gift giving, and she will tell you she is pregnant. The day before she will tell you, you will see her at the midwife's. The midwife tells her that she is going to have a baby. It takes a season or so for her to give birth. On the day she has the baby, you will see her in bed, with the midwife and one of her parents. (or the priest, if it's Elli.) The midwife tells you to come back at 3pm. Talk to you wife before you leave, to give her some comfort. Whoever is standing by the door will move once you have talked to her. Come back at 3pm, you will hear, not see, your wife giving birth. The midwife will announce it's a boy(you can't have a girl). Talk to the midwife and the parent, and then to her. She will ask you to name the baby. Congratulations, you now have a child. Stages- Newborn:The baby stays this way for a few seasons. Pick him up and walk around with him every day. You can give him gifts, but it's hard to give it to him and not drop it. Here's how:Stand in front of the baby. If his shadow is visibly on you when standing still, get your item out. If the item is in the shadow too, the baby should accept it. Some days you can get in the shadow, but others you can't. Crawling:Now your child crawls around on the floor by your wife's feet, and he wears a colorful costume, too. Pick your child up and walk around like before, and give him a gift. You can also show him your dog instead of a gift. Walking:Your child can walk now, and you can talk to him. It's best not to talk to him in the morning, since he's still tired and doesn't have much to say. Just give him a gift instead. You can't pick him up anymore, you have to talk to him everyday instead. ---------------------- 14. FAQ ---------------------- Q:Where's the beach? I can't find it. A:Before you go through the 'welcome' entranceway in the green ranch, go to the right. You'll see a little bit of land stuck out, like the other passageways to the other areas. Go through it, and you'll be at the beach. Q:How do you put your cows/sheep outside to graze? A:In the barn, ring your cow bell. The animals will come towards you. Stand behind them and push them towards the door. They will disappear, which means they are outside. Once the animals you want to graze are outside, ring your cowbell again, and lead them to your grassy area. Remember to ring the bell multiple times, since after a while the animals will stop following you. Q:I accidently put my chicken/dog/baby someplace that I can't get it out of. What do I do? A:Reset your game. This happens sometimes. If you put one of these too close to a building or try to take them into the bathtub or toilet, they get stuck there and can't get out. Your baby will get taken out, but since your animals stay wherever you put them, they're stuck. Also, if you take an animal into a girl's room during her sickness, if you leave without it, it is stuck there forever, since once you leave you can't get back in, unless you divorce the girl who's room you left it in. Q:Can a girl's heart rating go down? What about your Wife's? A:Yep. If you give her stuff she doesn't like, like grass or bugs, or let your animals die, her heart rating will go down. If you do things like that to your wife constantly for a long time, I've heard that she will leave you, but I haven't tried it myself. Q:Can you have a daughter? Can you have another baby? A: No, and no. Your wife will always give birth to a boy, and since the carpenter won't make you another baby bed, you can't have two kids. Q:The Ranch Owner said I did a terrible job taking care of his cows(1st winter), but I thought I did a really good job. How come? A:I'm not totally sure about this, but, I *think* that if you haven't bought a milking machine, you get a bad rating for some reason. Once I had the milking machine and brushed, fed and talked to the cows and didn't let them go outside or get sick. I got a good rating. The other time I did the exact same thing, no milking machine, and I got a bad rating. Hmm. If you still get a bad rating, then make sure you're doing everything else besides the machine. Q:The carpenter says he'll give me the leftover lumber from the bridge building to me. So, how do I get it? A:He's lying. You can talk to him and check your mail and estimate and wood pile, but he doesn't give it to you. Either it's a mistake in the game, or there wasn't any wood left from the making of the bridge. Q:I don't know what I did, but for some reason I can stand a long distance away from an egg and I pick it up. How, and why? A:It's another glitch for all I know. I kinda suspect it has something to do with keeping 6 chickens outdoors, but I'm really not sure. It eventually goes away after several days. Q:When I brush my cows, they follow me around, and get in my way. How do I make them stop? A:Your cows and sheep naturally move about and in your way, but if you do something that makes it happy(talk, brush, milk) it follows you around. Stand in front of it, or at it's side or in behind, and it will move in that way. Or else, just exit and enter the barn and their positions are reset. Q:How do I get the other couples to get together? How do I stop them? Do they have kids too? A:The guy is in charge of the relationship, basically. Talking to the girl will get her to like you, talk to the guy and he will get enough confidence to date the girl. If you want to get couples married, talk to the guy a lot. Talk to him in the bar, too, since then he might talk about the girl, if you're really good friends. Eventually, one day he'll come over to your farm and ask you to come to their wedding. Continue to talk to him, as well as his wife, and they'll eventually have a baby. To stop them? Just ignore the guy, or don't talk to him so much. Q:I have a girl at a pink heart now, but the blue feather isn't in Rick's shop. How do I get it? A:This is a detail many people don't mention. You MUST buy a kitchen before you can get the blue feather. Why? Because this is needed for several things, one is a place where your wife hangs around in the evening, to give more of a sense that you're eating dinner together and she makes it for you, and also so she can give you that big feast on your birthday. If it still doesn't show up after it's built, wait a few days, and also remember to keep on talking to the girl. Q:How do I get the matter transporter that Rick shows me? A:You can't. Rick just shows it to you, and it fails, so he won't sell it to you. This scene is just to show that you are friends with Rick. Q:Is Rick a girl? A:No. Ann calls him a HE, Rick talks about being rejected by a girl, and "Rick" is a pretty boyish name, I think. ---------------------------- 15.Other Harvest Moon Games ---------------------------- Besides the Nintendo 64, a few other systems have versions of Harvest Moon. Here, I'll tell you what system they were on, a bit about the games, and how they are different from Harvest Moon 64. -Snes:Harvest Moon- This was the first Harvest Moon game, ever. Since HM64 is a sequel to this game, it has many things left out that HM64 has. Sheep and both horse and dog races weren't in the game, and unlike HM64, you could only play up until your evaluation. Some things were in this game that HM64 didn't have, like the sprinkler, the butter/Cheese makers, and the ability to have more than one child. You had to buy the saddlebags, the carpenter made your room larger instead of adding other rooms, and there was a flower garden that grew flowers only if you ate power berries(like the wall chart in the HM64 kitchen). One of the biggest changes, though, were the girls. They have all have underwent major changes from SNES to N64. Here are the girls of HMSnes: Ellen: She looks very little like Elli. Ellen has spiky brown hair, a t-shirt and shorts, and a sweater around her waist. She runs the restaurant. Maria: She has straight, blue hair and a yellow hairband(similar to Popuri's), a blue dress with frills, and no glasses. She runs the church. Ann: The most similar to HM64, the only change is that she wears a black leather jacket and shorts. She runs the tool shop. Nina: This is Popuri's ancestor, she has the same fluffy pink hair, but no headband, and wears an apron. She runs the flower shop. Eve: Very, VERY different from Karen. Eve has a long, red dress, blond hair, and looks like a movie star. The only similarity is that she runs the Juice shop, which is kinda like the bar. I haven't actually played this game yet, so that's all I know. -Game Boy:Harvest Moon- This game probably came out before N64 did, because it is similar to the Snes version. This is also the only other HM game I have played. Compared to the Snes version: Things Left Out: The dating/marriage element, you can only walk around your own farm. Things Added: You can pick between a male or female farmer, and between a dog or cat, and you can get the harvest sprites to take care of your farm for you.. when your game is turned off. Once you get the sprites to be friends with you, you can set the timer on, and let the seasons go by on their own. You can also play as long as you want, like HM64. Every year, your grandfather rates you on your work on the farm. If you have become a ranch master(Full barn and chicken coop, happiness 250+, 6 power berries, X#items shipped, etc.), he will give you a gift. If not, he will just expand your farm. There are 3 gifts in all. ~My Rating The game stays true to the others, and the farming element is still as fun as it was. I like the 2-tool inventory system, where you can just press select to get out your tools and toggle them, rather than going to your tool screen. It's nice to be able to choose your gender and pet, two things that I wanted in HM64. Also the timer system is good to pass time when you don't want to keep repeating the same chores. However, the chores are what makes up the game, besides a couple festivals and the search for power berries. Once you become a ranch master, it's just a matter of waiting out the clock for your year to end, to get your gift. Although there are some nice points, this game gets boring pretty fast. Being a girl farmer instead of a boy makes no difference except your appearance. The reason I wanted to be a girl is to switch around the dating element to being able to marry one of the rivals, or at least have the people call me Ma'am instead of Sir. But with no dating or socializing, there's not much point. It's just the farming, nothing but. If you like that, then this game is for you. But if you don't, well, it's not. -Game Boy: Harvest Moon 2- This is an updated HM for game boy. This game I have played and own, so here's the info: Changes from HMGB: -You can raise sheep, harvest their wool or knit it into yarn -You can grow flowers in a hothouse -You can keep the animals in the pasture(useless unless you have a dog) -You can walk about the town and mountain, and talk to people -No harvest gnomes or sprites -All-New characters, except Mary/Maria -Can trade things with Legend of the River King 2 -Can play "video games" on your TV ~My Rating This game is a lot more fun than the first, but it still can get boring. The addition of walking in the town is cute, but pretty useless, since nothing anybody says changes.. ever. You can't noticably become friends, and, this is the worst, you STILL CAN'T MARRY! The new stuff you can do on the farm is more fun than walking around or going to festivals. One thing I think is odd.. you can buy video games for your TV. The TV in your game. So, you're playing a video game of a person playing a video game. Other than that, they're nothing to scream about, you can only get 2 as far as I know, and they're *really* hard. That kind of hard that's downright unfair. Oh well, let's see how the next one turns out.. -Harvest Moon 3:Game Boy- I know almost nothing about this game. I know it won't be here soon, if at all. But, I've heard a rumor that you can marry in *this* game. I wouldn't keep my hopes up, though, since that's what they said about HM2. More info when I can get it. -Playstation:Back to Nature- This is an updated version on HM64 for Playstation. Here's some info on the changes: -You can walk about the city, which has a hospital and a mall -Rivals have changed:Rick is added and is Popuri's brother(!!), Kai is now a sports fanatic, There is a doctor as a rival, and they are already going out with the girl you're after! -You can now cook the recipies you get, buy ordering stuff like blenders and microwaves over the home shopping network, and making them with stuff from your farm. -Graphics are immensly improved. You can see more of the girls in their text box pictures, almost down to their knees, and they are out of the box, so they are larger and easier to see. -The towns and amount of people are bigger. The girls each have their own houses. -Lots of new festivals, like the Tomato throw and Chicken Sumo All of the girls are kept from the N64 version. I can confirm that Ann, Popuri, and Karen are u nchanged, their sprites are kept identical(but improved color). I've heard Elli's name, but haven't seen screenshots of her, I haven't seen or heard Maria yet.
