Overview: He’s ambitious, he’s tough, he can’t sit down for fear of sucking up the furniture. As the ship's XO and least-liked crew member, Updike feels it’s his duty to keep the rules and to make sure that the dust levels on the ship are within regulation. He seems incapable of talking below 50 decibles, and he considers it his right to treat everybody else beneath his rank as beneath his rank. The one thing that does endear him to the crew however, is that he makes for an excellent stress reliever, and is the constant victim of their pranks, especially from Roz, whom he can't stand.
