| The creation of a new nation is an extreme action, warranted by extreme need. Look at the civil rights movement in the United States. Begun decades ago, there are still rights which need to be won for women and those not of 'White' heritage. Had the first civil rights demonstrators decided to form a new country instead, their struggle would have been over a generation ago, and their children would be profiting now from their hard work. There are many ways to form a nation -- but secession is the only viable choice. Getting on a ship and sailing until you find new land? It worked a century or two ago, but not quite viable today. Buying an island? Prohibitively expensive, only an option to large governments and corporations -- and we have no intention of forming Mitsubisistan or Microsoftia to gain our freedom. Violent overthrow? No, killing people to prove peaceful intentions is futile. Building a rocket ship and terraforming the Moon or Mars? What the fuck have you been smoking? The only practical way to create a new nation in this era is to secced from an already extant nation. |
