This is the first of two stories that I wrote for the AnthroCon 2005 conbook. It also proved to be the more difficult of the two. I knew, once I decided to write on the theme of "Heroes" that I wanted to give a nod to the men and women who have served our country. But beyond that I was somewhat clueless as to how this story was going to shape up. I actually started writing it sometime in November of 2004. I got about halfway through and pretty much got stuck. I had an idea of where I wanted it to go, but I couldn't get it there. Finally, in March of 2005 I got back to it. I pretty much rewrote the story from scratch and at least was able to progress through to an ending. I still ended up rewriting almost the entire thing in small chunks before I was happy with the result. The only problem at that point was that the story was around 1,300 words long and the limit for the conbook was 1,000. I trimmed down as much as I could, but that ended up only being about 50 words. Without the editing help of my mate, strmwlf, I never would have made it all the way. I owe him greatly for the final version of this story. For those of you who went to AC or otherwise have access to the conbook, this story appears on page 16.
