Musties |
A mustie is a member of the genus of small, agile, flesh-eating mammals, including the wild black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes), the pet-shop ferret (Mustela domesticus or Mustela furo), the ermine (or stoat in England) (Mustela erminea - Armenian ferret), and the weasel (Mustela whatever). They vary in size, with the domestic ferret being the largest, at about 19" and 5 lbs. for the male, somewhat smaller than an otter or housecat. Domestic ferrets are easily tamed, although rather rowdy, and they interact well with other pets, excepting for mice, etc. They have extremely sharp claws and teeth, and engage in very rough play with other ferrets. Ferrets have musk-producing scent glands which give off a heavy, though not-unpleasant, odor.
A psychosexual adaptation of the ferret appears when you grasp the beast by the scruff of the neck. The animal relaxes and goes limp, yawning, and becomes quite tranquil and passive. This allows the mother ferret to care for and transport the young without injury to herself or the kit, allows the male ferret to mount another ferret without danger, and allows a human handler to tend and gentle a pet.
The Furcadian Mustie (Mustela furcadiensis) in the original Talzheimir character art most closely resembles the larger, more intelligent domestic ferret. Unfortunately, the lack of information about the mustie, and their admittedly odd appearance, have caused negative feelings among other furres towards musties. The now-defunct Mustie Alliance served as a quiet force of change against those perceptions.
