Author: Kilworth, Garry Title: The Foxes of Firstdark (British title: Hunter's Moon) Furry content: foxes, dogs, badgers, others Rating: 4 (out of 4) paws! This is the touching story of an English (British) fox named O-ha. It begins as the vixen sets off on her own, away from her parents, during the natural dispersal period of foxes. The time setting, near as I can tell, is in the 1950s or 1960s. The other major character in the book is Camio, an American red fox. All of the characters, from major to minor, are superbly drawn. It really is a wonderful story, and I don't want to give any of it away (even the blurb on the inside of the cover spoiled it a little for me - Me! Someone who likes to read the last few pages of a book while still reading the first chapter!) Suffice it to say that the book traces O-ha's life in rural to suburban England, and how she adapts to changing problems and situations. The story also points out that no matter how much things change, the more they stay the same. Watch out, this is a tear-jerker. Take it from someone who is addicted to Animal Planet, the Discovery Channel, and PBS... The author did a very good job researching for this book. At the beginning of the book he includes a little bibliography, which lists some non-fiction books on foxes and fox behavior. Equally impressing is the explanations of O-ha's spiritual beliefs. There are also long discussions on the differences between the legends of the different animals. Truly a very excellent book, highly recommended.
